Why are we suddenly all deficient in magnesium? I mean, magnesium is found in PLENTY of food such as spinach, pepitas, beans, almonds, tofu, whole grains, quinoa, amaranth and more.
Yet, almost 50% of Canadians are deficient in this mineral.
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. It is one of our main electrolytes responsible for over 300 functions and if we become deficient in it, we are at risk of developing low potassium levels as well. Without proper electrolyte balance, our bodies struggle to transport nutrients, despite eating a well balanced diet. Furthermore, it is a building block for RNA and DNA synthesis in which contribute to healthy genes and protect us, as well as our offspring, from cancer. It also helps with muscle and nerve function, in which can aid in preventing cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, fatigue, cramping, or weakness.
It is essential for the formation and maintenance of bones, and, believe it or not is a precursor in producing serotonin in our gut which can aid in preventing depression. Plus, it helps the body detoxify itself of chemicals, heavy metals and other toxins.
Signs of a deficiency are high blood pressure, headaches/migraines, heart palpitations, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle contractions, cramps, insomnia, anxiety and even numbness in extremities.
So why the rise in low levels? Well, it’s people eliminating carbohydrates to diet or eating the wrong types!
Some of the most magnesium rich foods are whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens. Unfortunately, people have developed a fear of carbs over the years and have struggled to properly nourish themselves.
On the flip side, most of those eating carbs are eating refined carbs in which have NO magnesium due to the way they are processed. When whole grains are refined, the outer bran and germ are removed, leaving the endosperm. By removing those two elements of the grain, we end up throwing away most vitamins, minerals and fiber.
My tips? Try and reach for whole grains, less fortified/packaged foods, legumes, nuts, seeds, tofu, and even try a magnesium supplement. Swipe to see the types that may suit you!
