How your hormones and gut issues are linked, and how metabolism is the answer

I think I have said this enough, but I am going to say it again: everything is connected.
Have you ever taken a step back and thought that maybe, just MAYBE, your irregular or missing periods are correlated to how your gut is doing? To how you’re digesting food? To how you’re absorbing and even nourishing your body?
Your hormonal imbalances are NOT the root cause to your problem. They are NOT the issue at hand and we should be focusing on. Rather, your missing period, your crazy cramping, your mood swings, your hair loss, your constipation, your 35 day period is a SYMPTOM of a deeper issue. It is a RESULT of something that has gone wrong higher up in the “food chain” so to speak, and the only way to fix it is to work backwards.
Your hormones aren’t just there to look pretty. They are signalers, remember? Cells make hormones for other cells so they can talk to each other and produce enzymes to make things happen. Hence, if our hormones aren’t balanced, then there is an issue in either the enzymatic production, or the energy of the cells, which means a couple of things:
1. We’re not nourishing our selves properly due to poor food quality/diet
2. Sources in which hormones are produced, like the liver, kidneys, pancreas, etc., are stressed
3. We aren’t absorbing things properly in the gut (whether it be a pathogen, poor stomach acid, poor enzyme production)

Your hormonal imbalances are symptoms of a bigger picture, and it is usually connected to what is happening in the gut. Why? Because more than three quarters of our immune system is in there, and it is responsible for breaking down our food, absorbing the nutrients, sending them to where they need, protecting us from pathogens, parasites, etc., and detoxing waste. If any of these processes are a struggle, how we produce, how much we produce, and how our hormones react gets directly affected.
So what are all the things our gut does?
-Makes hormones if it has the capability of breaking down and absorbing nutrients from food with proper enzymes
-Balances blood sugar levels with the same reasoning as the first point
-Protects us from pathogens/bacteria with adequate levels of stomach acid
-Gut lining acts as a protective barrier to prevent the entrance of toxic material
-Most serotonin (happy hormone) is made in the gut
-20% of T4 is converted to T3 in the gut
-80% of melatonin is made in the gut
-Sends a connection to the brain (gut brain axis) to signal there is either inflammation or not so it can produce cortisol
-Gut has estrobolome which is a group of bacteria that produces an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase that breaks estrogen down into its active form so it can bind to estrogen receptors. Too much beta-glucuronidase can lead to too much estrogen circulating in the body
-Removes waste/toxins and hormones through bile and urine

Your gut issues are usually not caused randomly. A pathogen didn’t just waltz in and say “I’m going to make trouble”. There are specific things that had to occur before in order to make your gut susceptible, a stress to be exact.
First, we have to understand that the gut has a major responsibility: to digest food, absorb nutrients, produce enzymes, and simultaneously protect us from pathogens and toxins by burning them through our stomach acid and removing them as waste via urine or bile. This is why 80% of our immune system resides in the gut, and WHY it takes up so much energy to digest, absorb, excrete and protect.
Our energy source comes from our cells, and just like any other part in the body, we need readily available energy to have, particularly in the gut in this case, working efficiently.
Most people would argue screw the cells, we have to heal the gut first, but what they fail to understand is that if our gut is a mess already due to a stressor which has already depleted our energy, our hormones will not heal. As a defense mechanism, our body
-reduces the production of stomach acid which leaves us susceptible to pathogens
-reduces the production of enzymes
-slows food breakdown which can lead to malabsorption and leave food particles circulating, which can be taxing in the intestines
-reduce bile flow which can stress the liver, and this itself can cause a multitude of issues like estrogen dominance, poor T4 to T3 conversion, and the production of cholesterol to make steroid hormones, thus slowing metabolism
-Metabolism slows down which in turn causes the body to conserve energy, which can look like hypothyroidism, weight gain, hair loss, constipation, loss or light periods, slow digestion, slow recovery, low immunity
-and add to the pile of stress.
So the answer? We have to figure out a way to nourish our cells to provide the body enough energy to lower the stress levels and then work on healing the gut because it will HAVE enough energy to overcome it.

Your gut is the only place that has connections from the outside world-in. That’s a heavy duty responsibility. Not only does it have to be able to absorb and assimilate nutrients from what you nourish it with, but it also has to protect you from pathogens and know how to detox dangerous compounds.
However, your gut is also permeable, and the process of digestion, absorption, and detoxification goes beyond the gut. It extends into the pancreas, the kidneys, the gallbladder, the liver, the intestines… so if it goes, everything goes.
So what are things you should look out for that can add stress to the body and influence your gut?
Lack of sleep
Gluten
Medication like antibiotics or the birth control
Unfiltered water
Mental stress
Chemicals like endocrine disruptors found in makeup, plastic, pollution, etc.
Poor food quality like GMOs, foods sprayed with pesticides and fertilizers, poorly fed/brought up animal products, SAD diet
Radiation/EMFs
Under nourishment like restrictive diets, not eating a balanced diet
Over exercising
Mental stress
How? Because stress requires your body to use more energy, robbing it from cells, using up more minerals, and forces it to compensate to keep itself functioning while trying to keep some level of homeostasis.
Things that can happen?
Stomach acid can drop, which can make you more susceptible to pathogens and make it harder to break down food
Enzyme production can drop, which inhibits nutrient absorption and breakdown
With cells receiving less nutrients, organs get less energy, our liver and our thyroid can get super stressed- which is pretty much what runs our metabolism. With less T4 being converted to T3 in the liver or gut, our metabolism dumps, and we end up feeling more stressed, tired, and shitty.
