The 3 Stages of Stress Adaption

YOUR BODY CAN’T STAY STRESSED FOREVER.
You may be experiencing stress all the time, but eventually you’ll body will start to break down.
There are 3 stages of stress the body adapts to as it weakens: The Acute Phase, the Compensatory Phase and the Exhaustive Phase.

Acute Phase: You just started to experience a stress or have enough energy reserve to have the body gather enough energy and send you a signal it needs help. Cortisol levels elevate, and this can cause a cascade of symptoms such as suppression of steroid hormones, weight gain in the waist/belly area, elevated blood sugar, high insulin levels which increases your appetite and cravings, as well as instigates inflammation. In addition, thyroid conversion gets blocked, your melatonin production lessens, and loss of muscle mass can occur, thus you struggle with recovering from the day, you experience sleep disturbances, and your mood and memory are not sharp. With a combination of things, this can also damage your gut, leaving you susceptible to infections.

Compensatory Phase: You are still symptomatic as in the Acute Phase, BUT you are losing resilience. You are slowly starting to feel a low, as your body is struggling to keep you running on all of those stress hormones. You may not have extremely high cortisol levels anymore, but anything and everything triggers a stress response. Your circadian rhythm is completely off, you may have developed food intolerances by now, and symptoms of sub clinical hypothyroidism. Your hypothalamus has either slowed or stopped secreting CRH, and your pituitary gland has slowed the output of ACTH, thus officially struggling with HPA axis dysfunction.

Exhaustive Phase: Completed depleted and have dropped from that adrenaline high our bouts of feeling “okay”. You are now constantly feeling very ill due to LOW levels of stress hormones because your body lacks the reserve to produce adequate amounts anymore. You may struggle with hypoglycemia, low blood pressure, low heart rate, feeling cold all of the time, and have sudden sensitivities you may never have had. These sensitivities can look like food sensitivities, allergies, chemical and environmental reactions. You probably have developed some severe gut issues, malabsorption, and all of your minerals are either depleted or imbalanced. You are officially at your lowest of lows.

There is only SO MUCH your body can do in sending you a sign for help.
