NON HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS HORMONAL ONES
.
Yes ladies, you do not have to be on synthetic hormones to take control of your fertility.
I remember sitting in my doctor’s office at 13 and my doctor asking if I wanted to go on the pill just because I was “of age”, not educating me on the several different methods (steroidal and natural) that I had
.
Turns out there are options which work just as well, if not more, when used appropriately
🔸️
Copper IUD: The most popular method used worldwide by women, unlike the hormonal IUD, the copper IUD (or Paragard) does not suppress ovulation or alter hormones in any way. Instead, what happens is that it releases copper into the uterus creating an inflammatory response which is toxic to sperm, thus preventing fertilization. It also changes the consistency of cervical mucus, thin the endometrial lining, and, just the presence of having something IN the uterus prevents the body to implant an egg. (More on the IUD here)
🔸️
Condom: Also in the top ranking between both sexes, condoms are easy and don’t emit any hormones. They are simple and effective when used properly, but do have the chance of breaking or slipping.
🔸️
Diaphragm: A silicone or latex like dome that seals off the vagina wall, thus preventing sperm from entering the uterus. Keep in mind you have to insert it up to 2 hours before intercourse and leave it in 6 hours after.
🔸️
Cervical cap: Similar to the diaphragm, it fits around the cervix, but it is a bit smaller.
🔸️
FAM: Known as Fertility Awareness Method. This form is not only the cheapest, over 99% effective but offers you more than just the knowledge of when you can get pregnant. It teaches you true body literacy and understanding what is happening with your hormones. In short, it is the method of using the 3 signs of ovulation which confirms and identifies our fertile window: Cervical mucus, Body temperature and Cervical position.
