Amenorrhea and Energy Balance

DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO EAT 2500 CALS A DAY TO REGAIN YOUR CYCLE?
Short answer: Sort of.
Long answer: Here-we-goooo⬇️
.
So of course, we are all different. We are different body sizes, we exercise differently, some of us more active than others, we all have different body composition based off of muscle mass and fat, AND our journey to having hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) has been different.
.
BUT, there is a caveat.
Most women struggling with HA are in an energy deficit.
How can this look like?
🔹️Having exercised too much
🔹️Currently not eating enough calories to support bodily functions
🔹️Have previously not eaten enough to support bodily functions, and now back at a “normal” calorie intake
🔹️Not eating frequently enough
.
So how does this work?
Think of your body as a bank, and calories is money💰
Every time you move, breathe, just flat out LIVE, you will burn calories (aka use money)💸
.
Now, there is only so much money you can take out of your checking account until you start dipping your hands into your savings account. Your savings account can look like your muscle mass, the glycogen stores in your liver, and yes ladies, even your boobs. Once you’ve taken all the money from there- what is left?
Nothing. So, with no more money to take, the bank will ask you to take out a loan, and this is when it gets tricky. With a loan, you have to pay the bank back with INTEREST, and then start saving again to put back into YOUR account.

An average woman needs about 2000 calories. This average woman could very well not be you! You could need less, or you could need more, BUT the 2500 calories model is there as a ball park for this “average” woman to get her period back because that extra 500 calories is counted as the INTEREST she has to pay back, as well as her savings account.
