Herbs to Balance Blood Sugar

HERBS TO BALANCE BLOOD SUGAR
🌱
Guduchi: A popular herb in Ayurvedic medicine, it is usually utilized as a nerve tonic but has been shown to help improve insulin sensitivity by controlling glucose levels. In fact, it has been studied to possibly help protect those with diabetes from diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage
🍭
Bitter Melon: Just like how its name notes, it is a bitter plant that works directly on our liver. Remember, our liver requires glucose to function, so the bitterness helps stimulate the liver gently, along with bile flow, as well as help with those struggling with hypoglycemia
🍥
Cinnamon: There are four types of cinnamon out there but the most popular two are cassia and ceylon. Ceylon seems to be the more preferred type because cassia can contain higher amounts of a compound called coumarin which can act as a blood thinner. For some this may be beneficial, but it’s important to note many people with blood sugar issues also have blood pressure issues and can be on medication, thus always check prior to supplementing. Cinnamon has been shown to help manage both pre/diabetes
🍡
White Mulberry: Typically used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an antibacterial, as well as even for parasitic infections, the root bark in particular has been shown to help treat diabetes, and the branches seem to also act as a diuretic. The fruit in itself though acts more on ‘kidney energy’ via TCM which is connected to the ears (tinnitus, ear infections), the bones (osteoporosis, teeth issues), and the emotion of fear (anxiety)
🍬
Berberis: One of the most popular herbs for blood sugar, berberis contains berberine, a compound that can also be found in goldenseal, barberry, turmeric and Oregon grape. This compound activates an enzyme in particular cells that are typically found in our muscles, heart, kidneys, liver and brain, thus helping regulate blood sugar levels
🍯
Gymnema: Another ayurvedic plant that seems to “block” the absorption of glucose from the intestines and reduce sugar cravings simultaneously. Conversely, it has also been shown to help reduce cholesterol levels and be used as a mild diuretic if one is struggling with water retention.
