Testosterone and Myths About Women

WOMEN NEED TESTOSTERONE JUST AS MUCH AS MEN DO
.
Let’s STOP compartmentalizing hormones into whether it is more beneficial for a particular sex and let’s start looking at them for their FUNCTIONS
.
1️⃣ Testosterone is only a male hormone: Yes, men have a higher amount of testosterone when compared to women, however it is also the most abundant active steroid hormone in females throughout their entire life
2️⃣Its only for libido: Wrong, testosterone does so much more than make your horny hahah Ladies, this hormone is located in almost all tissues. Conversely, as we age and levels decline, low levels seem to be correlated with bone loss, anxiety, poor cognitive function, joint and muscle pain.. the list can go on. So it is definitely protective in many ways!
3️⃣ High testosterone can cause heart problems: Despite men having higher rates of heart disease the connection does not mean causation. Testosterone has actually been shown to have beneficial affects on glucose metabolism, lean body mass, and lipid profiles. It even acts as a vasodilatorin, opening up blood vessels, and inhibits atheromata
4️⃣ Elevated testosterone can cause hair loss: Although in individuals with PCOS there is anecdotal evidence and correlation that elevated androgens are linked to hair loss, if you have been following me lately, my hunch is that hair loss is more related to low thyroid function and the aromatization of testosterone to estrogen. There is no evidence high testosterone causes hair loss.
5️⃣High testosterone can cause liver damage: Again, correlation does not mean causation, and the research behind this statement is due to synthetic steroid consumption- not the actual biological levels of testosterone that a women would produce.
6️⃣ Elevated testosterone can cause breast cancer: Quite the opposite actually. As mentioned in this post, I was speaking of aromatase inhibitors, which is when testosterone were to aromatize into estrogen. Most people who are on medication for this are cancer patients- so on the contrary, estrogen is what we want to be wary about.
7. It masculinizes women: This is strictly dose dependent and it is important to look at context.
